10 useful ways to use a lemon and save money

When life gives you lemons…..

Why lemons?

Lemons are high in vitamin C, fiber, and various beneficial plant compounds. These nutrients are responsible for several health benefits. Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent, and it also has some mild exfoliating properties, due to its acidic nature. Therefore, if you have a scar that is thickened or darker than the surrounding skin, lemon juice might have some effects on the thickness of the scar and may lighten its color a bit.

1. Lemonade

Lemon juice acts as a digestive and a detoxifying agent and helps in cleaning the liver leading to better digestive health. Also contains vitamin C.

2. Lemon tea to help with cold or flu

Adding fresh lemon juice to hot tea with honey may reduce phlegm when you’re sick. Drinking hot or cold lemonade may also help. Another method is to add mint leaf’s and one squeezed lemon to hot water. And drink when cool.

3. Fade scars with lemons

Lemons are rich in vitamin C and citric acid, so they can help brighten and lighten your skin when used over time. Remember to wear SPF when using lemon juice on your skin, though, since the citrus fruit can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Mix a few drops of coconut water with a few drops of lemon juice. The coconut will hydrate your skin, and lemon will clear and brighten it.

To make it, combine 1 cup of water with 1/2 cup white vinegar and 1 cup lemon juice in a glass spray bottle. Spray on glass surfaces and leave for 10 mins. then wipe away with damp micro fibre cloth.

Rub a lemon over the inside of a plastic container, or rinse it with lemon juice to help remove stains and smells. for tougher stains and ice cubes to a tub along with one squeezed lemon and leave to sit for an hour.

6. Colour hair

The suns heat opens cuticles in your hair strands and the lemon juice lifts colour, which allows the sun to bleach the hair. to use this method, simply Squeeze fresh lemon juice and add it to a spray bottle. And then add a teaspoon of argan oil to keep your hair from drying out. Spray all over and sit in sun light for 1-2 hours. And voilà you should have naturally lighter locks!

7. lemon Sorbet method

Heat 250ml water, the sugar and the lemon peel in a small pan until the sugar has dissolved then bring the mixture to the boil. Cook for 3 mins then turn off the heat and leave to cool. Pick out the lemon peel and discard. Measure out 100ml of lemon juice and add to the sugar mixture. Pour into a freezer box and freeze for 1hr 30 mins then mix up with a whisk to break up and incorporate the ice crystals. Keep mixing the sorbet every hour for 4 hours to break up the ice crystals. Stop mixing when firm but still scoopable then store in the freezer for up to 1 month.

8. lemon brightening scrub

Pour the sugar in a bowl and add the olive oil a bit at a time, folding in the sugar. Grate the zest of two lemons into the mixture. Then squeeze the juice of each, folding it in a bit at a time. Pour mixture into mason jar and enjoy!

9. lemon fridge de odour

Have you ever left half a onion or garlic in your fridge? If yes then you would know that un wrapped onions leave fridges smelling funky! A great way to solve the issue is to leave two halves of a lemon in the fridge. Its also wise to the keep cut onions wrapped or in a sealed container. lemon juice can also be used to clean the interior of a fridge for a nice lemony scent.

10. Remove bad scent and stains from hands

When chopping garlic or onions the smell can linger even after washing your hands with soap. to combat this issue rub lemon onto your hands and leave for a minute before rinsing with water. The same method will apply for hands stained  with paprika, turmeric etc.
